Creativity, Activity, Service (Grades 6 - 12)

Yet another unique way in which Atlanta International School fosters world-ready change leaders and problem solvers is through Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), an essential element of the IB curriculum that extends learning beyond the classroom.

As part of CAS, students initiate and participate in CAS experiences representing three strands:

  • Creativity: Arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
  • Activity: Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Service: Collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need.

For each CAS experience, which often connects to something students study in the classroom, students learn how to initiate and plan an experience; implement and take action; and reflect on the experience and adapt course, as necessary.

In doing so, they hone their leadership, organizational and collaboration skills as well as develop an entrepreneurial spirit and a service mindset that propel them to act in the face of global problems versus remaining silent.

  • Grades 6 - 10

All students are required to participate in the CAS program in order to advance to the next grade level. They work with their advisors to balance their activities between the three strands outlined above.

Each student must demonstrate achievement in the eight learning outcomes outlined in the IB curriculum:

    1. Increased awareness of strengths and weaknesses
    2. Undertaken new challenges
    3. Planned and initiated new activities
    4. Worked collaboratively with others
    5. Shown perseverance and commitment in activities
    6. Engaged with issues of global importance
    7. Considered ethical implications
    8. Developed new skills

Written reflections are the primary evidence of growth and are driven by the student (and guided by an advisor).  Students may also choose to reflect in oral presentations, emails, journals, photo essays, videos/DVDs, weblogs or a traditional essay format.
  • Grades 11 & 12

DP students (grades 11 - 12) are required to complete CAS experiences weekly for 18 months with a balance between creativity, activity and service. Students must also complete a CAS project and reflect on their personal growth.
