Atlanta International School student, Asanshay Gupta, developed an app aimed at helping makeshift COVID-19 facilities in India during his summer internship with Allied Medical, an Indian company specialized in HFOT machines. Today, over 100 medical practitioners are using the app to monitor the oxygen supply/flow rates in their facilities. Asanshay, who is in Grade 10, described the app in his own words:

"During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was assumed that countries would need large numbers of ventilators, which are extremely complicated and expensive designs. With many makeshift hospitals popping up all around the world, it was impossible to make enough ventilators for the demand. Doctors around the world have now found out that the majority of patients requiring hospitalization can be treated effectively with relatively low-cost equipment like High Flow Oxygen Therapy (HFOT) sets, which are now being used in large numbers.  As the name suggests, these machines have a high consumption of oxygen and most HFOT equipment does not give a direct reading of the oxygen flow or consumption. On the other hand, some very simple systems with flowmeters make it difficult to calculate the percentage of oxygen that is delivered. This leads to many medical professionals being bogged down with difficult mental calculations with lives on the line.

My app helps these frontline heroes to quickly complete many of these calculations, such as the lifetime of an oxygen cylinder, the total number of cylinders of liquid oxygen used in an entire day, or how to set the flowmeters to achieve a certain oxygen percentage and total flow.

I designed this app after my engineering internship with Allied Medical, an Indian company who works on HFOT machines. This app was made using Flutter, Google’s cross-platform app development language, and is currently available on the Google Play Store. I am currently working on an Apple App Store launch.
