1619 Remembrance and Observance

AIS participated in a national movement to observe the 400th year since 20 Africans were sold into bondage in what is now known as the United States. Our 1619 remembrance and observance, where we acknowledged the impact that slavery has had on the evolution of society across the Americas, in our host country and city in particular, its impact across the world, and on members of our AIS community, began by soundng the tower bell 20 times in remembrance of each of the 20 Africans sold into bondage in August of 1619. This was followed by a school-wide moment of silence. We were honored to have Martin Luther King, III as a keynote speaker at conversation we hosted on Engendering Belonging in a Divided World.
