Cousins share love of summer camp at Horizons at AIS
"We were cheering for the Atlanta Dream – and they won!"
- Derek and Ayelen
The first impression of Derek and Ayelen is that they are opposites. He is an engine that runs on ‘go’, and she is quiet and more reflective. But they share this in common: They agree that they and their families are happy to be part of the Horizons program.
The two smiling cousins are in second grade at Garden Hills Elementary. Field trips are Ayelen’s favorite activity. This past summer, she was excited about an ice-skating adventure and relished in her first trip to see a professional basketball game.
“We were cheering for the Atlanta Dream – and they won!” she says.
If she wasn’t at Horizons this summer, it would be “horrible,” she says laughing. “All I’d be doing is just reading books. I love to read chapter books.”
Derek says he loves the field trips, too – and recess. He especially enjoys using Lexia to learn. It’s a software that helps English language learners develop key skills in a personalized way, to keep up with the rest of their classmates.
“You learn something and explore the world in real life,” he said, adding “I would be sad if I wasn’t at Horizons.”
