College Counseling at AIS

We know AIS students are uniquely prepared through the school’s rigorous IB curriculum, language-immersion model, and multicultural community to excel academically, emotionally, and socially at whichever college or university they attend.

Helping students choose the university that’s right for them is our top priority — we appreciate that finding the right college is about more than finding the best college; it’s about finding the best college for each particular student.

Applying to college is an exciting time in our students’ lives, but it can also be an overwhelming process. We’re here to make that process as seamless as possible.

At AIS, our college counselors provide comprehensive and individualized guidance in the search and application process for universities worldwide. Through individual, family, and group meetings, we help students identify and apply to colleges and universities that best fit students' academic and personal interests, needs, and goals.

(Please note that this web page and the AIS College Counseling Office use the terms "college" and "university" interchangeably to denote a four-year, Bachelor's degree-granting institution.)

  • Funding Higher Education

Paying for college and university is a concern for most families. Each college or university website has a net price calculator to help families get started in understanding the costs of higher education. Additionally, the AIS College Counseling Office hosts an annual financial aid information night early each fall.

  • Standardized Testing

Standardized testing is an important part of college and university applications. While the transcript, which indicates rigor of curriculum and achievement, is the most important consideration, testing is used as another gauge of a student's academic progress. All tenth and eleventh graders at AIS take the PSAT in October each fall. AIS College Counselors work individually with each 11th grade student to determine a testing plan that fits each student. The links below are for general information; please follow up with individual college counselors to determine which test should be taken when.

    Test Preparation

Free test preparation is available through the following websites:

Please remember that it is quite possible to prepare for standardized tests using free resources from the above links, as well as other online and library sources. We do not endorse any specific test prep program. Please research which program is right for you. Below are some of the programs AIS students have used.

  • For College Representatives

Please contact our Counseling Assistant, Claudia Brand, for assistance in scheduling a visit: or 404-841-2070.

  • Summer & Enrichment Opportunities

Summer programs for students can be educational and fun. Students don’t have to be involved in an academic program on a college campus for it to serve as meaningful in the college admissions process. We encourage students to further explore something they are interested in and enjoy- volunteering at a local animal rescue group if they love animals, working a part-time job to earn some extra money, shadowing a family member in a career they may have interest in, or sampling a class to further support an academic interest. Most experiences that students have to pay to join do not provide tangible advantages to college admissions; families should consider such opportunities primarily for their general educational and developmental benefits. Feel free to check in with one of the counselors for more information about summer programs.
