Developing Future Leaders Who Change the World

Preparing students to lead and to be caring, contributing members of our global society makes up a large part of our mission in the Middle School, which serves students in grades 6 through 8.

Learning in the Middle School is largely student-driven, as our teachers present concepts and issues and then venture where students’ questions take them. Students work both individually and in teams, collaborating with classmates from around the world.

In the Middle School (as in the Primary School and Upper School), we strive to make learning fun, to connect the learning taking place in the classroom with the real world so that students enjoy and see the relevance of what they are studying.

Our Approach

Our students enjoy a wide array of subjects, with each one holding equal importance so as to nurture the whole student. Our balanced curriculum includes:

  • Arts
  • Computer Science
  • Design
  • Experimental Sciences
  • Humanities
  • Language & Literature
  • Language Acquisition
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Education

Students can take Geography and History as well as Language and Literature classes in English, French, Spanish or German. Students at all language proficiency levels are welcome to apply to the Middle School. We offer acquisition classes in English, French, Spanish, German or Chinese.  For more information about our language philosophy and policies, click here.

Building on the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed by the PYP, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) serves as the underlying framework of the Middle School curriculum and prepares students for the rigorous IB Diploma Program (DP), which they follow in grades 11 and 12.

Emphasizing inquiry, action and reflection, the MYP transitions students from transdisciplinary learning to interdisciplinary learning—nurturing that cross-collaboration across at least two distinct disciplines that equip students to make connections and solve problems from multiple angles.

We appreciate that the transition to the Middle School from the Primary School (or a school other than AIS) can be a big one. Our hands-on and accessible principal, faculty, and student support services are here to make that transition as seamless as possible for both students and their families.

Beyond the Classroom

As we prepare our students for the Upper School and life beyond AIS, we continually provide them with opportunities to serve in leadership positions. Just as the MYP nurtures each child’s individual talents and strengths, so too does the diverse array of leadership opportunities, large and small, available for our students.

Students also have the opportunity to embark on exciting learning excursions that enable them to experience and practice what they’ve learned in the classroom.
