After-School Program Descriptions

FIRST Lego League Team (by application only)

FIRST stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology." It is not playing with Legos; it is a "sport for the mind" where students apply math and science to the engineering (building of the robot) and programming (for specific tasks) necessary to create a small robot to compete against other teams. A team of six to eight students are presented with a problem in September. They create a solution to present at a number of regional events with the finals in April. The commitment is up to 80 hours of time from September through April, and it is expected that students who want to be part of the team attend all sessions. All incoming Grade 6 and 7 students will be briefed on the application process sometime in mid-August. Application deadline is Monday, August 20.
