AIS Strategic Plan: Overall Approach

Phase 1: Mission/Values and Implications for the Strategic Plan
Timing: September – Early November 2005
Key Activities:
- Establish working group of key constituents to help with the strategic planning process and establish range of input options for key constituents
- Review the mission and values of AIS with all key constituent groups (e.g. parents, faculty and staff, alumni, Board)
- Discuss / reaffirm with everyone what it means to live the AIS mission and values on a daily basis as we strive for excellence in education
- Identify the high-level implications of living our mission and values that the strategic plan must address (an example implication could be: AIS must enhance the Middle School curriculum and student experience)
Outputs: To be reviewed at November 7th Board meeting
- Definition of Excellence in Education (Final version)
- High-Level Implications for the Strategic Plan
Phase 2: Aspirations and Ideas
Timing: Early November 2005 – Late January 2006
Key Activities:
- Input and discussion with key constituent groups on the specific 5 year aspirations for AIS and generate a long list of potential projects and initiatives
- Integrate the recommendations from the CIS report and capital campaign feasibility study into the long list of potential projects
- Begin initial data collection to assist in evaluation of the long list of projects
- Structure the long list of potential projects, conduct a quick initial screen and create the final long list to more fully evaluate
Output: To be reviewed at late January Board retreat
- Summary of 5 year aspirations
- Long List of Potential Project Goals
Phase 3: Prioritize and Integrate
Timing: February – March 2006
Key Activities:
- Build facts as needed to more fully evaluate the long list of potential projects as well as estimate the potential resource requirements for each project
- Collect key constituent input (both qualitative and quantitative) to help prioritize the potential projects
- Final analysis, prioritization and recommendation of the specific project goals to be included in the new strategic plan
- Integrate the recommended projects with long term financial model of the school
- Integrate strategic plan projects funding requirements with the capital campaign
Output: To be reviewed/adopted at the early April Board meeting
- Strategic Plan for 2006-2010
Phase 4: Implementation Planning
Timing: April – June 2006
Key Activities:
- Administration and Board work together to develop the key action items and to finalize the sequencing required to begin implementing the strategic plan
- Allocate resources and assign accountabilities for the key action items
- Communicate the adopted strategic plan back to all key constituent groups
- Establish milestones and metrics to monitor progress
Output: To be reviewed at the early June Board meeting
- Detailed action plans and updated / new metrics
Phase 5: Implementation
Timing: June 2006 -
Key Activities:
- Fully integrate the strategic plan into day-to-day activities/decisions
- Incorporate strategic plan actions into annual operating budgets
- Change Management process in place to track progress and support change
