Jazz in Black & White

2010 Jazz in Black and White, February 27
The Harlem Renaissance at AIS
The Harlem Renaissance Experience passed through
the Atlanta International School on Saturday evening, February 27, and
thanks to AIS family and friends, it was a success. It is your
participation that makes events like this the “post-event talk of the
week”.
Hosting approximately 221 guests, the
evening offered something to stimulate the mind, the imagination, the
pallet, the spirit and the body. It was filled with guests “dressed
to the nines” in period attire, professional swing dancers and cameo
appearances by notable personalities of the past representing the
literary, entertainment and politics of the era. Live entertainment was provided by
the sensual Theresa Hightower and the dynamic and versatile Mose Davis
Band and DJ extraordinaire, Mr. Frank Thomas, who brought down the house
with a mix of dance tunes that kept the party in full swing. The
evening was enhanced by the delicious cuisine of the 20’s and 30’s
provided by Grand Gatherings Catering, Veta Victorian, Proprietor and
by Stephen Satterfield,
founder of the International Society of African Wines, who provided a tremendous selection of South African wines
produced by Black vintners of the Cape town, South Africa region. The
event also featured an art auction showcasing the works of nationally
known artists on the theme of Jazz in a variety of media to include
print, original, craft and sculpture.
An event of
this magnitude required the imagination, creativity and hard work of
many people. It is with great appreciation that recognition is given to
the organizers of Jazz in Black and White 2010 - “The Harlem
Renaissance”; Tracy Britton, Verna Cleveland, Holly Johnson, Leslie
Thomas, Maschanika Richardson and Kimberly Rasmussen. Special thanks
is offered to Rob Warren for production assistance and guidance, Jean
Millkey for assistance with the faculty/administration raffle, John
McCusker for reproduction assistance, Ruth Reiker for computer support
announcements and general volunteerism, Admissions Office, Headmaster
and Heads of each school for advertising assistance, the Development
Office for overall coordination assistance, Business Office for
financial assistance and guidance and Maintenance for reliable and
consistent support throughout the planning and implementation stages of
this event. Many thanks to each of you who were able to attend or were
generous enough to make it possible for others to attend. Your spirit
made for a memorable evening.
The Black Parents
Harambee Cultural Club is looking forward to preparing for next year’s
event and offering another memorable evening for your enjoyment. The
success of this event makes it possible to enhance the educational
experience of students in the AIS Music Department.
