The Atlanta Mayor's office and City Council hosted the Global Economic Development Conference in late October. The Primary School Chorus of AIS was invited to perform for the gala dinner on the evening of October 19 in the atrium of City Hall. Dignitaries from 15 countries representing sister cities of Atlanta were in attendance. While waiting for the time to perform, Councilman Jim Maddox came and spoke to the 27 fourth and fifth grade students about the Sister Cities program. His comments resonated beautifully with our IBPYP Learner Profile. He spoke about the importance of acknowledging and respecting different perspectives in the world. Councilman Maddox said, "I may not agree with what a person believes or thinks but it is important to listen and respect the person and their beliefs."

Following a brief question and answer time, the chorus went down to the atrium and sang three songs relevant to the occasion, "It Takes A World of Differences to Make A Difference in Our World", "Sí, se puede" (It Can Be Done), and "Kuna Karamu" (Here is a Party). Later in the evening, Mayor Shirley Franklin spoke about the challenging work and quoted from the song, "Sí, se puede." The chorus, dressed in international costumes, looked as beautiful as they sounded. It was an educational and fun evening for the students and chaperones. We especially thank AIS parents Leah Leach and Claire McLeveighn for facilitating the chorus' participation in the event.
