On Saturday, October 23, the inaugural Faculty & Friends Golf Tournament was born. It was a wonderful display of golfing prowess to rival the recent Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta. The tournament directors—Ms. Wendy Newman, Mr. Neil Cook, Mr. Neil Spencer and Mr. Roger Groenink—were inspired to organize the tournament whilst watching the recent European performance in the Ryder Cup.

Sixteen golfers turned out at Highland Walk Golf Course in Victoria Bryant State Park in a modified “fourball scramble” tournament format. The winning team assembled a mighty total of 62 points which left the tournament referee Mr. Groenink scratching his head and questioning the directors’ allocation of handicaps, which will undoubtedly be reviewed for the summer tournament.

The winning team members were Mr. Björn Jemsby, Ms. Olivia Lorton, Dr. Robert Brindley and Ms. Rachel Hovington. Other prizes on the day were for the longest drive on the 4th hole (497 yards from the back tee) and closest to the pin on the 16th hole (158 yards from the back tee). Mrs. Suzanna Jemsby won the longest drive by leaving herself a second shot of approximately 210 yards to the pin and duly collected a lob wedge that her husband has had great pleasure in using ever since. Ms. Hovington won the new putter prize for closest to the pin, very apt considering Mr. Robert Shaw-Smith had previously mislaid her putter!

A competitive fun day of golf was enjoyed by faculty, administration and friends in the beautiful surroundings of the north Georgia mountains.
