Last Wednesday, September 22, AIS was honored to host representatives from the international community. After visiting with former President Carter at The Carter Center, José Ignacio González, Executive Director of Hemisphere, Inc., and Dr. Marcel Boisard, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, spent a few hours at our school getting to know the AIS community.

A small coffee reception was held for our visitors in the lobby of the newly renovated Music Center. With parents, trustees, and nearly two dozen students on hand, Dr. Boisard gave an informative presentation on the organizational structure of the United Nations.

The visitors then made their way to the auditorium for the Upper School morning meeting. Señor González spoke to the students about his role as Executive Director of Hemisphere, Inc., Hemisphere’s work trying to secure the Secretariat of the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) for Atlanta, and the difficulties and politics associated with international trade.  He then took questions from the students.

Following Señor González’s remarks, the visitors, who also included Alex Mejia from Hemisphere, Inc. and Christophe Nuttall from UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Resarch), remained in the auditorium and were delighted to spend time speaking with individual students and answering their questions.

Special thanks to Axel Leblois, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, for providing the school with this wonderful opportunity.
