Around Atlanta

Our tour of the Atlanta Botanical Garden was wonderful. We chose a gorgeous day to view the spectacular gardens and Dale Chihuly’s glass artwork.

Next on the schedule is a guided tour of the Herndon Home, a National Historic Landmark.

Alonzo Herndon was born a slave in Georgia just before the Civil War. A field laborer in his youth, he later owned extensive real estate in Atlanta and founded the Atlanta Life Insurance Company. Mrs. Herndon designed the beautiful home that was built for the family in 1910, much of it by African-American craftsmen.

Our visit is on Thursday, October 26. We’ll meet in front of AIS after morning carpool, have coffee, and then drive to the Herndon Home for our 10 a.m. tour. The cost is $5 per person.
