Hurricane Relief Efforts
Dear Parents,
We have been shocked and dismayed, as you have, with the events as they have unfolded in New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabama. The Secondary School met yesterday to discuss what we can do to help. Mr. Sohi, with the Student Council President, Afrooz Family (Grade 12), will speak next Tuesday to the Primary School faculty and students about the effects of the hurricane and what we can do to help. Afrooz and I also met with a large group of students from grades 5 to 12 to discuss ways in which we can raise funds. Our plan of action for the whole school will be outlined next week and we will be seeking volunteers from parents, students, faculty and staff to focus on particular fund-raising events.
The School has also been receiving visitors from displaced people from New Orleans seeking our help in finding places for their sons and daughters in our school. Our normal enrolment procedures will take place, being sensitive to the particular individual needs of the students. However, places are very limited.
In the short term, we are acting as a drop-off centre for our neighborhood to send supplies to St. Elizabeth Hospital (Gonzalez, LA); thanks to Fulton Paper and Bill Hirsch (parent of the school). The following items are needed:
- Non-medical items (sterile tape, band-aids, bandages). No medicines, please
- Children's and adult's clothing: T-shirts, pants, underwear, socks, shoes
- Blankets, towels
- Diapers, baby formula, baby food, baby wipes
There will be a Fulton Paper truck at AIS this Saturday, Sunday and Monday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. From Tuesday, there will be a truck here during normal school hours during the week, with student and parent volunteers helping you with any donations at carpool.
We will continue to keep you informed of the ways in which you can help.
Regards,
Robert Brindley
Headmaster
