'Learning to Look' Art Series a Success

In this first year of the Learning to Look series, formed with our partnership with the Atlanta Galleries Association, we have had eight contemporary artists display their work in the mezzanine of the SAC. Every month when the exhibit changed, either the artist, the curator/owner of the gallery, or one of our art teachers discussed the work with several groups of students.

One group of students, the fifth grade, should be highlighted as they came to critique every piece of artwork. This enthusiastic group of students was a pleasure to work with. They were able to discuss their own opinions about the work and use their knowledge of art to discuss the piece. During the latter part of the year, members of staff were very impressed with the way the students were able to talk with such confidence to both the artists and the gallery owners. I would like to thank Mrs. Diane Dear and her team for making those talks happen every month.

The series has been successful in itself but it has also created many other contacts and connections for our students. Not only did our students attend gallery openings and visit artists here in Atlanta, but also artist Vicente Wolf asked the 11th grade visual arts students to visit his interior design studio in New York. The students took up his invitation during their IB Art/Music/Theatre trip to New York and it was a great experience.

We look forward to bringing you the next Learning to Look series in the 2007-2008 school year.
