AIS Student Corresponds from Uruguay
Eighth-grader Micah Plott is now a student at Colegio Español Miquel de Cervantes Saavedra in Montevideo, Uruguay. Micah, who has been at AIS since the first grade, is studying a full curriculum in Spanish at the school, which follows the educational curriculum and philosophy of schools in Spain.
Micah reports that school in Uruguay is different from AIS in that being in the Southern Hemisphere, Uruguay’s school calendar is reversed from here. The school year began in March. A two-week winter break comes in July, and the weeklong spring break follows in September. He will return to Atlanta and AIS in November, at the end of the school year in Uruguay.
Academically, the curriculum is similar to AIS. At Cervantes, all of Micah’s classes are in Spanish except for the English-as-a-second-language class, where Micah assists the instructor with teaching. In addition to the usual eighth-grade subjects, Micah is studying the Portuguese language – no surprise given Uruguay’s proximity to Brazil.
“The school is great and I’ve made new friends who are helping me learn about life in Uruguay while I tell them about life in America,” says Micah. “I speak Spanish all day, every day, and that has made me a lot more comfortable in the language. I miss speaking English sometimes, so then I know it’s time for a call home to Atlanta.”
