Track and Field Teams Streak Ahead
The 28 varsity athletes participating in track and field this spring have overcome practice space constraints to shine in competition. The girls have had great success in field events. Earning first place in their respective events at the Holy Innocents’ meet were Laura Geronimo (pole vault), Lauren Berry (discus) and Leah Hampton (triple jump). Annika McNally also placed in the top three in high jump in the Holy Innocents’ and Landmark meets. Both boys and girls teams placed high in the 1600m relay. Nik Beisert is the boys’ leading pole vaulter, and Rohan Thompson placed in the top three in the triple jump in several meets.
The athletes have had the benefit of several specialists working with them to improve performance and stamina. Assistant Track Coach Lewis Lawhorn said, "There are several participants who are expected to perform well at the regional meets." At publication time the regional competitions were just around the corner. Go to the track and field web page (www.aischool.org/athletics/track.html) to get more information. Go Eagles!
After a successful beginning to the season in March at Davis Academy, the MS track and field team has continued to turn in strong performances throughout the season. To date, the team has competed in eight meets, in which the team has consistently placed in the top ranks in the various events. Of special note, the girls’ team has been very competitive. Lindsey Sanborn (distance running) and Sarah McKenney (discus throw) remain undefeated in their respective events and both currently hold school records. Alice Morrison (three firsts in a field meet) and Marie Lindheim (tie for first in pole vault) also have strong showings.
The boys’ team is being led by top performances from Michael Nkereuwem, Nigel Washington, Gerald Demeunynck, Zachary Taylor and Alex Thomas, who recorded a personal best and first place finish in the pole vault (eight feet).
Breaking News: Congratulations to the MS boys and girls track teams who just became Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference Champions—the fifth win for the girls team (who won last in 2005) and the first time in 11 years for the boys. This is the first time for AIS that both teams hold the title in the same year.
