Learning to Look Brings Poetic Painter to SAC

Our featured artist this month at AIS is Duy Huynh. The piece you will find on display in the SAC is very similar to the one you see here. According to the gallery where his work is to be displayed in May, Duy is an exciting young artist whose poetic and contemplative acrylic paintings symbolically reflect the experience of geographic and cultural displacement. In his paintings, human figures maintain a serene, precarious balance in a surreal setting; often, female figures are portrayed suspended in mid-air, while jugglers and tight-rope walkers do balancing acts. Images that recur in Duy's work, such as suitcases, books, butterflies, and birds, all relate to travel, whether physical or spiritual. The muted colors and simplified forms in his work contribute to a sense of calm in the face of dislocation in all its forms. Duy lives in Charlotte, N.C.

The artist describes his work as follows: "As it is with many artists, my work is an extension of life and experiences. My paintings are mostly figurative, primarily narrative, and sensitive in exploring issues of Asian traditions, my family and relationships. It is a continual exploration of motion and emotion in order to portray not just the beauty of the human form, but the triumph of the human spirit. The desire is to achieve a synthesis of artistic and cultural elements from the East and West to produce dreamlike imagery that imbues a sense of freedom and tranquility. In a sense, Eastern moods, through Western modes, and vice versa."

Duy is represented by the Aliya Linstrum Gallery on Peachtree Street where his exhibition is showing from May 4–21. For more information about the artist and to view his work, please visit the gallery's website at www.aliyagallery.com. We hope you enjoy his piece in the SAC.

The artwork created by our nine IB art students will be on display around the school for the entire month of May. Please come by and look at the evidence of our students' talents.
