Third Grade Students Show Business Savvy

Thanksgiving Day sales are nothing like the shopping frenzy that happened in the SAC on April 12 as young Grade 3 entrepreneurs set up shop to sell their wares. The Craft Bazaar was the culmination of the unit of inquiry "Off to Work We Go," with the central idea being that businesses develop because of the need for goods and services. The students participated in activities that encouraged inquiry into how businesses develop and are organized, the difference between goods and services, and factors that affect jobs.

Students created a business in the language classroom, and in English they learned how to market and advertise their products. The culmination of this unit was the Craft Bazaar where the students sold their goods. The crafts were so attractive and the marketing was so successful that the bazaar was sold out in just a couple of hours, disappointing many who were hoping to buy during the day.

The unit taught many important skills, such as math, creative writing, reading, art, and cooperative planning. The profits after expenses are to be divided amongst the students so they can buy a souvenir on their fieldtrip in May. In addition, a percentage of the profits will be given to a charitable organization.
