Math Competition News
The last couple of months saw our students participate in three international contests. We had a wonderful set of results.
Our Grade 12 IB Higher Level class gave a strong performance in the American Mathematics Competitions, AMC12, which took place in February. Two of the students qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, which they participated in at the end of March.
In the Canadian Mathematics Competition, students had 60 minutes to answer 25 questions that became increasingly challenging. A score of over 120 out of the maximum of 150 in all three contests is a very good result. In the Pascal contest (Grade 9), 12 out of the 25 students obtained a score over 120. Adrien Pellerin scored a maximum of 150, an outstanding achievement. In both the Cayley contest (Grade 10) and the Fermat contest (Grade 11), we were pleased that the majority of students scored over 100. We will have to wait for the team results, but our Grade 9 team should do well with their score of 432.
From mid-February to the beginning of April, we also competed in the four contests offered by the ECIS Mathematics Leagues. In each of the contests, students sit three papers, each consisting of six problems. With one mark per question, the maximum score is 18. Students scoring 12 or more are awarded a pin. These contests were open to all students from Grades 5 through 12. Grade 5 competed for the first year and left a significant mark on the contest with 40 students being awarded a pin. In total, 414 students competed in the contests, 126 of them being awarded a pin, which we hope to receive before the end of the year. Congratulations go to Sam Locke (Grade 5) and Layla Khuri (Grade 6), both of whom scored 18 points.
In May, many of our students in Grades 7 and 8 will take part in the Canadian Mathematics Competitions, Gauss contest, our last competition this year. We wish them success with this.
More information about all the above competitions, with links to the organizations that coordinate the contests, can be accessed through the department’s website: www.aischool.org/uppermaths.
Well done to all students who took part in these contests.
