Earth Day Celebrations

It gives the PO Recycling Committee great joy when we reflect back on accomplishments of this year. We have made significant strides in further strengthening our goals of educating and promoting environmentalism at AIS.

Some of the highlights of this year are:

  • The PS kids have stayed diligent for two years in promoting the concept of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. They believed they can make a difference—and they have. Congratulations to all the Primary School kids and the teachers for becoming the change they wish to see in this world.
  • We successfully covered school-wide events like the Family Picnic, WorldFest, Thanksgiving lunch, Spring Benefit and CASIE workshops. Some grade-wide events were also covered.
  • We hosted our Pilot Electronic Drive with TechCorp as our sponsor. It was another win.
  • The last event the Recycling committee hosted this year was the Earth Day celebrations on April 21!

Our partnership program with Pike’s nursery enabled us to buy a tree for our PS playground. Through the sponsorship of Air Liquide ACI, we bought school supplies (rulers) made out of recycled denim and plastic. The Primary School’s discretionary budget sponsored pencils made out of recycled newspaper. Earth sent home these school supplies in everyone’s goody bag for celebrating her with such a bang!

The main attraction of our Earth Day event was the PS assembly. The students enjoyed an entertaining play written, produced and directed entirely by Ms. Umi Sethuraman’s Eighth Grade advisory: Dylan Baker, Anna Bokman, Claire Colberg, Michael Giblin, Tori Hampton, Camille Herry, Natalie Jackson, Jessica Jordan Latiff, Nigel Kalumbu, Serg Mavalyants, Lucie Pages, Timur Selimovic and Dumela Thomas. The following 7th graders also assisted: Peter Andersen, Cristille Campana, Momoko Kobayashi and Daniel Song, as did 6th grader Alex Rodriguez. The play was, naturally, about Earth. The PS chorus also participated in the play by lending their angelic voices.

After the play, PS students sang along to Ms. Karen Peters’ melodies about Earth. Finally, the members of the Recycling Patrol received a certificate of recognition for their tireless and unsurpassed dedication to conservation and preservation of Mother Nature.

During recess, the students had a blast getting temporary tattoos of rainforest animals, ocean creatures and endangered species. In an effort to spread awareness, the PS students drew pictures on brown paper bags for our Buckhead area Publix store. The store will display the artwork and also use these bags to pack groceries.

Special thanks to parent colunteer Julie Latona for her help in coordinating the activities of this wonderful day. Thanks also to Umi Sethuraman and her advisory group, Karen Peters, Marie-Laurence de Postesta, Joyce O’Brien, Donice Bloodworth and Emily Henning for their contributions to this effort. Much appreciation to our sponsors for their generosity.
