Music Department “Notes”

Music Department April-May 2006 Recital and Concert Programs

Because of some unexpected changes to the school calendar, two Music Department events have been rescheduled for the months of April and May. The Primary School Band/Chorus/String concert previously set for Tuesday, April 25, has been moved to a daytime program set for Friday, May 5, at 1:15 p.m. The PS students will attend this concert and it is also open to parents and the general public. In addition, the Upper School concert program previously announced for Thursday, April 27, has been moved up two days to Tuesday, April 25. The date had to be changed for a very compelling reason: the recent success of our robotics team placed them in a national competition on April 27! The April 25 program will now include the US Strings, Chorus and AIS Symphony Orchestra. (The MS program scheduled for Tuesday, May 16, will occur as planned.) The conductors of all of these ensembles would like to see a large audience for both concerts, so please make every effort to attend one or all of our spring programs.

AIS Chamber Players Final Program

The AIS Chamber Players will conclude its highly successful season with a recital program on Tuesday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium. This program will feature performers of all levels, from beginners to faculty/staff. This program is traditionally a “free-for-all” type program and will present a wide range of performers, composers, styles, and historical periods.

Music Department Faculty News

Ms. Julie Harvey, Director of Secondary School Choruses, recently traveled to Savannah, Georgia, for the annual meeting of the Georgia Music Educators Association All-State Chorus (in which AIS student Jessica Sachsenmaier, Grade 8, was a participant.) Dr. Ronald Howard, Chair of the Music Department, will accompany the IB Grade 11 arts classes on the annual New York City tour, April 12-16. Later in April he will depart for Salt Lake City, where he will present and moderate at the 60th annual meeting of the Music Educators National Conference. Dr. Howard was recently appointed to the editorial board of the Music Educators Journal and had a book review published in the March 2006 issue of the Journal.
