Around Atlanta
On Wednesday, April 5, we will visit Wren’s Nest, the turn-of-the-century home of Joel Chandler Harris.
Harris grew up in rural Georgia in the decade before the Civil War. As an adult, he edited the Atlanta Constitution newspaper, and he also compiled and published many of the animal tales he had heard slaves tell as he was growing up. These “Uncle Remus” tales of Brer Rabbit and others became internationally famous.
Harris lived in an elegant Victorian home in West End which was transformed into a museum soon after his death, and this colorful Queen Anne-style house is a treasure of Atlanta’s history.
We will meet in front of the main entrance to AIS after morning car pool (about 8:30 a.m.), have coffee together, and then drive to Wren’s Nest. Admission is $8.
RSVP to Laurie Martin at woodrowway@yahoo.com.
Our last trip of the year, to the Atlanta History Center, will be on Friday, May 19.
