A Successful Season for 'Germany'

A Successful Season for 'Germany'

Due to the considerable interest in soccer in Grade 4 German, most of the boys in that group, along with a few guests, formed a team and entered the Chamblee soccer league. In their first season they won this league without losing a game and so, last fall, they entered the Ashford Dunwoody YMCA league. In this league, each team has to choose a country for their name. There was no problem here as most of the team players are in the German section, so Germany was the logical choice. Coached by former Upper School coach Mr. Tony Locke and assisted by Michael Collenberg (Grade 8), they again had a very good season, recording 9 wins, 1 tie and 1 defeat. The squad practices at AIS every Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., using whatever bit of space is not occupied by Track, Girls’ Soccer and Baseball. Games are played at the YMCA fields on Ashford Dunwoody Road every Saturday morning.

The team is now playing in the Spring Under-12 YMCA league and is therefore taking on teams that can include 5th graders. Our season started with another emphatic victory, “several” to nil, with over half the squad scoring a goal! So it looks likely that we will again have another winning season.

The squad members are: Doug Branch, Andi Collenberg, Niklas Dorsch, Mathias Guenther, Sam Locke, Mark Schwade, Nicolas Seidler (all Grade 4 German), Brian Cook, Connor Hagan, Jeremiah Hassett, Tristan Litré (all Grade 4 French), and Chris Jordan Latiff and Javier Sanchez Ylla (both Grade 4 Spanish).

Several of the parents also play indoor soccer in Marietta every Sunday morning and any AIS parent is welcome to join us. Contact Tony Locke at tlocke@aischool.org if you are interested.
