Congressman John Lewis Visits AIS
Congressman John Lewis spoke to Upper and Middle School students on Friday, March 25, the 40th anniversary of the successful march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama a march that would lead to the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Born the son of a sharecropper in 1940, Congressman Lewis grew up to become one of the key figures during the Civil Rights Movement. He was one of the founders of the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee). His organization followed the same philosophy as Dr. Martin Luther King, that of non-violent protest and sit-ins. Today, Congressman Lewis works tirelessly on human rights and issues of social change. His biography, Walking with the Wind, was published in 1988. He lives in Atlanta.
