IBO Official Speaks at AIS

Monique Seefried spoke last month to the Grade 11 Theory of Knowledge class about the role of ethics within the International Baccalaureate. Dr. Seefried, who is a Trustee Emerita at AIS and president of the IBO Council of Foundation, covered the history of education, ranging from the ancient Greeks to modern higher-level education, and explained the fundamental purposes of an IB education, in particular the value of an international education in today's world.

Dr. Seefried discussed the tools and attributes students need to succeed in today's global society; she also discussed the ethical values instilled in students by an IB education. "We strongly believe that IB students should be taught not only their shared citizenship but also their shared humanity with all individuals, regardless of citizenship," said Dr. Seefried. "The IB at its best fosters a learning environment that supports active thinking and intellectual engagement by encouraging its students to understand situations from the vantage point of others, see themselves through the eyes of others, and to wonder about the validity of what they encounter."

The presentation also focused on the value of being afforded the opportunity to encounter a wide variety of cultures as exemplified by international schools and the IB curriculum.
