Atlanta International School won the best school award in the Atlanta Dogwood Festival's Visual Vibes 2007, the high school art exhibit held for over 25 years in Piedmont Park during the Arts Festival of Atlanta. In addition, two AIS students received best in show and second place respectively. Both students won $3,000 scholarships to local art schools, $100 to spend in an art store, as well as other art supplies and prizes.
Emerence de Potesta, a senior, won Best in Show, while Arnaud Pages, a junior, won second place. They received their prizes at an award ceremony held at the Margaret Mitchell House on Thursday, February 22. Their work will go on display at The Savannah College of Art and Design and then at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, along with the work of six other students from AIS: Peter Manidis (Grade 12), Allison Lenz, Mia Palmer, Andy Gutierrez (all Grade 11), and tenth graders Morgane Pitte and Will Leekulcharoen.
AIS was the only school who had all the work submitted by a teacher accepted into the show, for which it received the best school award which includes a trip for a class at the Center for Puppetry Arts.
Visual Vibes is a highly competitive, juried exhibition that draws entries from high school art students in grades nine through 12, from 14 regional Atlanta counties. The artworks can be in any media and are judged on the criteria of originality, creativity and good craftsmanship.
Editor's Note: As AIS had every piece submitted chosen for the Visual Vibes exhibit, both Secondary School art teachers, Olivia Lorton and Jennifer Pendergast, received the Best of Schools Teacher Award, to honor AIS and its art department.
