AIS Zoning Application Approved

Thanks to the hard work of key people and the support of our community, on January 11 the City of Atlanta Zoning Review Board unanimously approved the rezoning of the school’s Peachtree Avenue property to allow special use for educational purposes. This is a major step in the process of gaining approval for our new campus master plan.

The Zoning Review Board members, appointed by the Mayor and City Council, meet twice a month to consider property rezoning applications and special use permits. The Board takes into consideration the recommendations of the relevant neighborhood planning unit (in our case this was the Garden Hills NPU) and the Bureau of Planning staff and makes recommendations to the Zoning Committee of City Council.

Over the next few months, the Zoning Review Board will recommend our rezoning application to the Zoning Committee of the City Council, and we expect that the City Council will approve our request.

We sincerely appreciate the approximately 100 parents, Trustees, faculty, staff and students who attended the Zoning Review Board meeting. A tremendous amount of time and effort was involved behind the scenes, in particular by Gerry Hull, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Steve Huyghe, Chair of the Building and Grounds committee. The resolve, diplomacy and forethought of these individuals, and of others within our community who know how City Hall operates, were key to the success of our application.
