AIS to Compete in FIRST Robotics Competition
AIS’s International House of Technology (IHOT) robotics team is competing in the FIRST Peachtree Regional Competition on March 3-5 at the Gwinnett Civic and Cultural Center in Duluth. Fifty-three teams from the Southeastern states will be competing for the opportunity to go to the FIRST National Competition in Atlanta in April.
Teams have six weeks from January 8 to build a robot for this year’s competition. The competition requires the robot to collect and place large three-dimensional triangles on and beneath goals to score points. Each match starts with the robot driving by itself for 15 seconds and then it is driven by a student for the remainder of the two-minute match. Six robots compete at a time (three on an alliance) and the alliance with the most points at the end of the two minutes wins the match. Teams will play multiple matches in order to determine their eligibility to participate in the Championship matches.
You can find IHOT team members working in the Robotics room in the afternoon, evening and on weekends getting ready for the competition. Team members include:
Grade 12 - Arianna Gutierrez, Jennifer Millkey
Grade 11 – Graham Belton, Santiago Cadavid, Giselle Dutcher, Afrooz Family, Joost ten Lohuis, Katie Wilkins
Grade 10 – Nik Beisert, Florian Colombel, Cesar Harari, Nico Hawley-Weld, Matthew Keeter, Vincent Leibbrandt, Peter Manidis, Charles Vanijcharoenkarn
Grade 9 – Rohan Dalvi, Matt Dodson, Andres Gutierrez, Eli Luttrell, Briggs Raad, Benjamin Schuttler, Martijn ten Lohuis
Grade 8 –Alex Gutierrez, Colin Hill, Mehmet Ozelci, Adrien Pellerin, Nicole Reardon, Sarah Wattles
Grade 7 - Floris ten Lohuis
AIS is fortunate to have an outstanding group of sponsors and mentors supporting our team. Financial contributions in excess of $16,000 have been provided by Kimberly-Clark, Siemens Dematic, NASA, Clyde Bergemann Inc., Mikon, Weatherly, Concord USA, AIS Parents Organization and AIS parent Dennis Pellerin. Critical engineering support is being provided by Kimberly-Clark engineers and by AIS parents Andrew Wilson, Stefan Witte, and Bernd Schuttler. Jean Millkey is the overall robotics coordinator and is assisted by many mentors including Uli Sprick in programming, Jill Herron and Bill Keeter in animation, Monica Dalvi, Erica Endicott and Ruben Cadavid in web, Barbara Greenall in finance, Giannella Alvarez and Brenda Hasham in spirit, and Tracy Ballot in fundraising.
Last year AIS won the National Rookie All Star Award at the national competition in Atlanta. This year, we encourage all students and their families to come and support the IHOT Robotics team in Duluth. FIRST events are known for great competitions with tremendous school spirit being demonstrated by the team and their supporters.
Come to the Peachtree Regional and support your team!
