AIS Athlete Competes in Junior Olympics

AIS freshman, Lindsey Sanborn, recently competed in the Junior Olympic Nationals in Cross Country Running at the University of Kansas, finishing the 4km in 16 minutes and 41 seconds and in 104th position out of 240 runners. Lindsey ran with the North Side Red Runners Club based in Sandy Springs.

The weather conditions were severe, with temperatures at 10°F and the hilly, demanding course blanketed in a coat of ice and snow. “This was by far the toughest race and course I have ever participated in,” stated Lindsey. This was the first year racing at the Junior Olympic National level for Lindsey, and she eagerly anticipates racing in the future, “This program is something I want to continue in,” she reflected. The Junior National Olympic program identifies top-level athletes across the US, striving to foster a competitive excellence along with a solid academic grounding.

Since arriving at AIS in grade 8, Lindsey has established herself as a highly competitive athlete. She comfortably won the Middle School District championships in cross country running and set school and conference records on the track at the mile and two-mile distance. In addition, over the autumn of 2007, running as Varsity member of the AIS Cross Country Team under the direction of Coach Fred Marano, Lindsey finished sixth place in the District Championships and an impressive fourth place at the State Championship -- quite an accomplishment considering Lindsey was competing against seasoned Junior and Senior Runners. Lindsey also plays on the JV and Varsity Basketball Team and plays on the AIS Soccer team.
