The Georgia Cotillion at AIS
Back by popular demand, the Georgia Cotillion, led by Alice Stephens, will be at AIS from March 14-17, 2006. The program will be open to Grades 5–8. Cotillion is an eight-class series of 75-minute classes introducing manners, social etiquette and dancing –- both traditional and more modern -- to young people. It is broken into two years, so that Year One will have four classes in March as will Year Two. Those students who participated in Year One last year will advance to Year Two this year, and a new Year One group will begin. This AIS program will run after school and will be held in the old gym.
The most important goal of Cotillion is to give the students the opportunity to feel secure about themselves in a social environment. The students learn these social graces alongside their peers, and the emphasis is on making this experience positive and fun! Students are taught social and dancing etiquette, how to make introductions, how to write thank-you notes, guidelines for general conversation etiquette, dinner table manners, and cell phone etiquette. Dance steps taught include the box-step, the cha-cha, and several newer, more modern steps, including line dances. Boys wear coat and tie and dark shoes (no sneakers), and girls wear dresses or skirts and white gloves.
The Georgia Cotillion operates in many Atlanta schools, including several public and private schools in the Buckhead area. Many schools in the AIS peer group participate in Cotillion.
The Cotillion curriculum is broken in to two years. The Year One program will be open to Grades 5-7. The Year Two program will be open to any students who completed the four-week session last year. In addition, new students from Grades 6-8 may join the Year Two program if they can’t participate in Year One. The program will cost around $150 for the four-week session.
Please download the form as a PDF and return it to either the Primary School Office (5th graders) or the Middle School Office (Grades 6-8) if you are interested. If you have any questions, please contact Louise Geddes at lgeddes@aischool.org.
