Athletic Information
Atlanta International School's athletic program is integrated with the core values and mission of the school and more specifically with the overall physical education program of the school. This is due to the adoption of the Middle Years component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme at AIS. The goal of our department is to have a continuous curriculum in physical education and athletics that supports and integrates with the IB curricular programs we offer the whole school. Gregg Albright is our Athletic Director and a PE teacher, who works closely with all PE faculty to coordinate the athletic programs to produce competitive teams and committed individual sporting performers.
We offer a wide variety of sports for boys and girls during each season of the school year and our coaches are committed to promoting sportsmanship and responsibility at all levels of play both on and off the field.

Primary School (Grades 1-5) Athletic Program
During this program, children will have the chance to participate in sporting activities (traditionally soccer, basketball and track & field but these may change to fit the needs of the students) on a more informal basis than in lessons. The emphasis will be on fun and participation, and all children will be encouraged to take part. The purpose of these activities will be as follows:
- To increase the physical activity time that children receive and to improve their fitness levels.
- To offer our children the chance to develop the skills they learn in PE lessons.
- To allow the children to participate in new activities that they may not experience during curriculum time.
Practice Times: 2:50 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. once a week. Sports activities and schedules will be available on the school website at the start of each season.
Middle School Athletic Program
A-Teams are our elite-level MS teams. Tryouts for the A-team will be held for all sports. All players not making the team are encouraged to join the community games.
Practice Times: 3:40 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. three times per week. Sports activities and schedules will be available on the school website, www.aischool.org, at the start of each season. This schedule will allow for the entire team to practice at all three sessions, increasing the cohesiveness of the team and their practicing skills.
Community Games Students not making the A-team will participate in the community games program. Community games will have components of competition, skill development and fun. The developmental and skills training components address the need to provide base-level skills development, while also teaching the students rules and strategies of game play. The community games program offers one complete regulation game weekly as well as a season-ending playoff.
Practice Times: 3:40 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. three times per week. Two times per week, each team will practice skill-building fundamentals with an experienced faculty member, elite-level coach, or an experienced varsity team player.
Upper School Athletic Program
Varsity Teams are our elite-level US teams. Tryouts for the varsity teams will be held for all sports. All players not making the varsity team are encouraged to join the JV team. Sports activities and schedules will be available on the school website, www.aischool.org, at the start of each season.
Practice Times: generally 4:45 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. (or later) four times a week. This will enable six full hours of practice each week for our varsity teams. This schedule will allow for the entire team to practice at all sessions, increasing the cohesiveness of the team and the athletes' practicing skills.
Junior Varsity Teams Students not making the varsity team may participate in the JV program. We accommodate all US students in this program and we will generate as many teams as there are students interested. Sports activities and schedules will be available on the school website, www.aischool.org, at the start of each season.
Practice Times: generally 4:45 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. (or later) three times a week.
Pep Rally
A Pep Rally is held to encourage and generate Team Spirit for your School’s Team. Usually the day of the “Big Game” all the students gather together for fun events, music, cheers and the public recognition of team players. For example in basketball the students and faculty gather in the gym to watch players compete in 3 point shooting contests, dunk contests and to watch the Dance Team perform.
Important Note - Permission and Physical Form
All athletes in Middle School and Upper School must have a signed permission to participate and physical evaluation form on file in the athletic office before tryouts.
Athletic physicals will be given at AIS on Monday, August 13, and Tuesday, August 14. More information
Parents and students are encouraged to contact the Athletic Department if you have any questions.
